The Laborers
by David Allen

A stone of cheddar
turns the boy's
hand out of his pocket

a dirt-flecked star
the tips of his fingers
drop into his mouth.

His sister kicks a rock,
his bag of books
a plum line strikes

her heels the yellow
bus escalates
above the pavement

the lane and vineyards
the parents tend in rows.
